BSAC Boston Student Advisory Council BSAC

The Boston Student Advisory Council (BSAC), administered by the Office of High School Renewal (HSR), in partnership with Youth on Board, is a citywide body of student leaders representing their respective high schools. It serves as the voice of students to the Boston School Committee. Student participants offer their perspectives on high school renewal efforts and inform their respective schools about relevant citywide school issues.

In fulfilling their responsibilities BSAC members:
advise the school committee as part of its decision making process;
keep their schools informed about relevant citywide issues;
work on BSAC projects developed during the year.

The following BSAC activities testify to recent years of growth as members:
worked with Tufts Scholars from Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service who mentored them in public speaking, writing, and leadership skills.
developed and presented proposals recommending changes to BPS Cell Phone and Punctuality Policies that were approved by the School Committee.
surveyed students on reasons and solutions for drop out rate.
surveyed BPS high schools on metal detector use and search policies and developed proposal outlining students' concerns about the efficiency and effectiveness of these policies.
surveyed their peers and student councils on the status of school-based student government; researched and reported on a wide range of BPS student experiences and uncovered issues of concern.
reviewed the old BSAC bylaws and provided guidance on how to improve them.
attended Community Forums on the Student Assignment Plan.
met with their headmasters to discuss BSAC and school issues.
attended School Committee meetings and Mayor's Youth Council Sessions.
hosted School Committee members and Superintendent at monthly meetings with enthusiastic exchanges about school issues and how BSAC can work effectively with the School Committee.
