ENGLISH 11 SPOKEN WORD POETRY UNIT

For the 3rd and 4th term, we will be working on a spoken word poetry unit as we read our next book. The unit will be based on reading new poets' work as well as writing, sharing ideas and approaches to poetry with sophomores and then performing our own. The unit will culminate in June with a poetry slam with invited guests attending. This is a service learning project where it is your responsibility to educate your peers and community about spoken word poetry through your performance. We will be focusing on writing and especially performing poetry and how voice can change the meaning of the written word. In addition to the poetry slam, one of our final products will be a book of the poetry that we decide to perform. It will include both the poem of the author that you choose to read as well as your own poem that you choose to read and a picture of you performing. Everyone will receive a copy of the book at the end of the unit and a copy will be kept in the classroom for future classes. This may seem like a daunting challenge right now but by the time June comes, you will have all the skills you need to do a great performance. Your grade for this unit will be based on your successful performance, a portfolio of the poetry you have both found and written, an analysis of a poem and an evaluation of your classroom effort throughout the unit.
