Earthday Lesson Plan: by Grade 2 teacher Lai Lai Sheung
Happy Birthday to You, Earth!

Material:
One easel
2 large song posters
2 large birthday cards with picture of Earth and a birthday message
1 package of colored markers
1 tape recorder with batteries
1 music tape of Raffi's "Evergreen, Everblue"

Procedures:
1. Say, "This activity is called Happy Birthday to You, Earth? How old do you think the Earth is?" Then ask volunteers to answer.
2. Say, "The Earth is 4 billion years old. Since it is so old, we need to take better care of it so when you grow up, your children and grandchildren will have a clean place to live."

3. Say, "I am going to teach you how to sing a birthday song to Earth. First, I'd like you to repeat after me." Point to the song poster "Ever Green, Ever Blue". Say one line at a time for the children to repeat.

4. Turn on the tape recorder and have the children sing along two times.

5. Ask the group to sign their names on the birthday cards. If there is still time, they can sing another Earth Day song.
