Historical Newspaper Assignment

Name:                                                                   Date:

In order  to: (a) review what we’ve studied this year for the final exam, and (b) help teach others about American history, we are producing a “Then-and-Now” historical newspaper.  Your job is as follows:

(1) Write an article about an event we’ve studied in American history this year.  Pretend that you are a journalist living at the time of the event, so you are writing “from the middle of the action.”  You don’t know what has happened later on in American history.  You will use the Newspaper Article Prewriting Worksheet to help you plan and write your story.  Sign up for a topic on the sheet on the blackboard.

Due: Tuesday, May 22, 2001

(2) Write a second item for the newspaper.  This may be:

a.  Another historical article

b.  An article about a current event (something that occurred this year, in school, in Boston, in the US, or in the world)

c.  A letter to the editor (either historical or current)

d.  An obituary about a great leader who has just died (historical)

e.  A historical advertisement, horoscope, crossword puzzle, Jumble, “Dear Abby,” cartoon, etc.

Due: Friday, May 25, 2001

(3) If you write or draw additional articles, advertisements, letters to the editor, comic strips, etc., you will earn extra credit.  Each item is worth 5-50 bonus points, depending on how much work it required and how well it is done.

 (4) Another way to earn extra credit is to work on the Newspaper Editorial Board.  We will meet during and after school (I have to warn you; last year we stayed after school until 6 or 7 p.m. a few nights in a row) to type up, edit, lay out, and publish the newspaper.
