Children,
Families and Community Gardeners Working Together
By Ana
Vaisenstein
Last
fall I was awarded a Service Learning Grant through BPS Impact II.
The purpose of
the grant is to integrate service learning into the curriculum while following Boston Public Schools learning
standards. I focused the theme around gardening and chose the Granada Park
Community Garden (just a few steps from the school) as the site for the project. My goals were to help children become more aware and respectful of the environment and
value the importance of community work to maintain a beautiful place in the
neighborhood. The children and I began working in the project in the fall and
continued throughout the year. Families and children joined in the community gardeners on
May 12th, for the first garden clean-up day of the season.
It was a real success! Many
families came and together we accomplished a lot!
Just look at the pictures!
